What means Halal?
According to the
Islamic rules, Muslims may only consume food, which on one
side is “ritual pure” (tahir) and on the other side
permissible as aliment. Both aspects together make food
permitted (halal) for Muslims. The ingestion of “ritual
impure” or “pure” but impermissible is basically forbidden
in Islam.
Things which are
impure themselves are called “causal impurity” such as urine,
excrement, sperm of endotherms, cadaver (including all
animals, which have not been slaughtered according to
Islamic rites), blood, dog, pig and alcoholic drinks.
Besides these “causal impurities” an object can be “impurified”,
if it gets in contact with something “impure” in a specific
way. An impurified object can be possibly “purified” again.
Some objects can be “pure” but its ingestion nevertheless is
impermissible, such as drugs.
The question of halal
comprises not only food itself but also additives, packaging
material up to chemicals in cosmetics and cleaning agents.
Goal of the
halal-certification is also to show methods how impurities
can be avoided during the production process and unavoidable
impurifications purified again, and how impermissible
additives can be substituted by permissible ones.
